CROSSING BORDERS IN STYLE
SAYURI SUZUKI
Biography.
Artist Statement
Much of my artwork revolves around the theme of being a third-culture kid and the resulting sense of lost identity. Growing up in Vietnam as a Japanese individual, I often found myself caught between cultures, feeling both connected and disconnected at the same time. This sense of displacement has been a driving force in my creative journey, influencing the themes and mediums I explore.
My move to Tokyo, where I lived for six years, was an attempt to reconnect with my roots and find a sense of self. This journey of self-discovery is deeply embedded in my portfolio, where each piece reflects my ongoing exploration of identity. The varying mediums I experiment with—whether it’s watercolor, porcelain, clay, or digital media—are a testament to the diverse influences that have shaped me and my artistic expression.
Through my work, I aim to capture the complexities of growing up between cultures, the search for belonging, and the beauty and challenges of navigating multiple identities. Each piece is not just an artistic creation but a reflection of my personal journey, a visual diary of the experiences that have defined who I am.
Born in Singapore and raised in Vietnam for 18 years, Sayuri has always been immersed in diverse cultural landscapes that have profoundly influenced her artistic vision. She later moved to Tokyo, Japan, where she pursued a degree in Communication and Media Studies, minoring in Art. This blend of disciplines allowed her to explore the intersection of media, culture, and creative expression.
During her time in Tokyo, Sayuri gained invaluable experience interning at fashion PR companies and working as a stylist assistant, where she honed her skills and deepened her understanding of the fashion industry. These experiences, combined with her academic background, fueled her passion for fashion and visual storytelling.
After graduating, she took the next step in her creative journey by enrolling in a master's program in Fashion, Film, and Digital Production at the University of the Arts London. Starting in September 2024, this program will mark the beginning of her focused exploration into the world of fashion film, where she aims to merge her diverse cultural influences and artistic talents to create compelling visual narratives.
