Inconvenient Convenience.s

This piece captures a quiet moment between a young girl and her mother selecting food in a Japanese convenience store. Though buying meals at these stores is a routine aspect of life in Japan, it contrasts sharply with my own experience growing up in Vietnam, where home-cooked meals were a daily privilege. This image reflects both the simplicity and subtle complexity of cultural norms around food and family, prompting us to consider the varied meanings of "convenience" across different lives and upbringings.

Stuck in Time.

This piece captures two schoolgirls cycling home in their uniforms, framed by traditional Japanese houses in the background. This image reflects the deep-rooted traditions in Japan, where school uniforms symbolize discipline, routine, and cultural continuity. Growing up in Vietnam and attending an international school, I never experienced the typical Japanese high school life, so this scene evokes a sense of nostalgia and curiosity for the traditions I never fully lived. Through this piece, I aim to convey a timeless snapshot of Japanese youth, where heritage and modern life subtly coexist.

Language Barrier.

"Language Barrier" is a portrait of my aunt, taken during a rare moment we spent alone together. Growing up in Vietnam, I didn’t have many opportunities to visit her, making each visit feel precious. Although language differences sometimes made communication challenging—Japanese is not my first language—our bond went beyond words. This photograph captures the quiet closeness we shared, a reminder of the connections that hold strong despite the barriers between us.
